Description

There are 100 infant, junior, primary, secondary and special schools in Brighton & Hove and school grounds cover at least 161 hectares (345 acres), or 2% of the total administrative area of the city.

A comprehensive wildlife audit of all the school grounds in Brighton & Hove was carried out from 2000 – 2002. The audit found that school grounds support over 6 hectares (13 acres) of woodland, 2.3 km (1.4 miles) of native hedgerow and 46 ponds, amongst other biodiversity features. However much room for improvement remains – over 90% of the area of school grounds in Brighton & Hove has hardly any wildlife value.

The council has established a school grounds biodiversity group to write and implement a Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) for school grounds. You can read the full report on the school biodiversity audit and find out more about the School Grounds BAP here.
