Description

Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) are nationally important wildlife and geological sites. SSSIs are designated and administered by Natural England, the Government nature conservation agency. There are over 4,000 SSSIs in England, covering around 7% of the country's land area.

Brighton and Hove has two SSSIs (Brighton to Newhaven Cliffs and Castle Hill), which account for 138.8 ha (1.6%) of the city's total area. Castle Hill SSSI is also designated as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and a National Nature Reserve (NNR).

As well as having direct legal protection, SSSIs are protected from damaging development by Policy NC2 of the Brighton & Hove Local Plan.
